The frosty bite of winter may still be with us, but we can’t help but daydream about the future burgers and hot dogs that will soon grace our grills. Hey, we can’t help it!
With all the SuperBowl talk in the air, we’re all jonesing for some barbecue. But until you can break out the grill (it’s going to be a few more months!), check out some of the coolest events around Albuquerque.
Flowers for Thought
Oh, if only we could all take a trip to the colorful Mediterranean coastline…Well, if you can’t afford the time or ticket to fly to Europe, your best chance for catching a glimpse of foreign flora is at the annual Winter Fire Colors Fire Show at the ABQ BioPark Botanical Gardens.
The display–which runs from Jan. 18 to Mar. 7–gives the everyday Albuquerquean a primer on the brightest and most beautiful flowers the European coastline has to offer (including the spicy pink salmon tone of Cyclamen and other annuals/perennials).
And with Valentine’s Day just a few short weeks away, a primer on flowers wouldn’t be such a bad idea, now would it? The show takes place in the Mediterranean Conservatory, and access is included as part of the normal admission.
Horsing Around for (Chinese) New Years
According to the Chinese Lunar Calendar, New Years is slated for Jan. 31st, which means this weekend is primetime for fostering Sino-American relations in the best way possible–celebrations!
Start at the 2014 Chinese New Year Celebration, which will be held at the Chinese Culture Center. But hurry, because the party starts at 1 p.m. on Saturday, and the Year of the Horse waits for no man (or woman).
The celebration will feature a traditional 60-foot-long dragon dance performance, ribbon dances, and martial arts demonstrations. We don’t exactly know what a lion dance is, but we’re eager to find out!
Celebrate the SuperBowl: With Skiing!
You heard right– before you bust out the nachos and cheese, work up an appetite on a pair of skis at Sipapu Ski and Summer Resort’s SuperBowl Celebration.
The resort–located a few hours north of ABQ–is offering lift tickets for $25 or less, and when you eventually tire yourself out, you can kick back and watch the game wrap up on big screen TVs with happy hour specials at the resort’s Riverside Cafe.
What’s more, each lift ticket purchased will be entered into a raffle for a Sipapu vacation package, and representatives from Angry Orchard and Sam Adams will pass out free samples and brew-related swag during the party.
