Favorite Things Friday

Posted by on Jun 6, 2014 in Uncategorized

If there’s any day when you shouldn’t feel guilty about reaching for that second (or first, for that matter) doughnut, today is that day. Seriously. Today is National Doughnut Day! Go ahead. Reach for it. And once you wipe the crumbs off your shirt, make sure you reach for your calendar, so you can pencil in these awesome events. It’s warm, it’s sunny, and there’s no excuse not to be out and about this weekend.

Food Truck Frenzy

Albuquerque food trucks will dominate the parking lot in the northeast corner of  Central Avenue and First Street tonight from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. for ABQ Food Trucks‘ First Fridays. The trucks will bring the food, and you’ll bring the growling stomach (and wallet). But it’ll be worth it. Most of us have a favorite food truck in town, and whichever it is, they’ll likely be firing up their grill here tonight.

Can’t make it? Mark next month’s first friday on your calendar—the  food trucks will be in full force then too.

Untroubled Waters

There’s something fishy going on. No license needed? Free lessons? Yes and yes.

In case you didn’t know (I didn’t until this morning), it’s National Fishing and Boating Week. Tingley Beach is hosting a Free Fishing Day on Saturday, June 7, from sunrise to sunset. This day, and this day only, you don’t need a license to drop your fishing hook in the water. BioPark employees, Tingley Beach volunteers, and New Mexico Trout experts will be giving kids free fly-fishing lessons from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Learn all about knot-tying, fly-making, and casting. Fishing supplies will be provided. And don’t forget to check out the education table that will be set up from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Butterfly Bait

Want to know how to get those gorgeous butterflies to flutter about your garden at home? Wonder no more after this Saturday’s Butterfly Education and Awareness Day, hosted by Wings of Enchantment Butterfly Farm. The learning will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Great Outdoors Nursery.

Come see butterflies at each stage of life—from curious caterpillars to beautiful butterfly. Not only is the event free, but you’ll get the chance to make nectar plant seed balls to bring home to your garden. Metamorphosis Caterpillar Kits and nectar/host plants will be available for purchase.

Here’s a teaser to get you started: planting milkweed seeds will help bring Monarchs to your garden.

What are you doing this weekend?
