It’s that time. Sun beams on outdoor patios (if those dark clouds hovering above us leave). Chilled cocktails reduce our body temperatures. Live music fills our ears. The grass is green and soft enough to sit on. There’s no reason not to be out and about this weekend.
According to the National Weather Service, July had the hottest monthly average temperature in 2013. So lets enjoy the mild weather before the sweltering heat sends us straight to the air conditioned living room. Put those restless legs to use and check out some of these events this weekend.
The YWCA Southwest Sound Fest will infest the Anderson-Abruzzo Albuquerque International Balloon Museum grounds Saturday, May 24. It’s a kickoff to the great festivals that will pepper your summertime calendar. Bring the entire family. It starts at 11 a.m. and the first band, High Desert Pipes and Drums, will grace the stage at noon. Sixteen diverse, local musical acts— including Little Hawk, Double Plow, Jose Antonio Ponce, Pimentel & Sons, Floozy, and Gimme My Moon Back—will take over two stages throughout the day. The last act, Brian Botkiller, will start at 8 p.m.
Come hungry because there will be plenty of food trucks firing up grills and there will be a beer garden for those old enough to drink. Tickets are $15 before the show, $20 at the door, and children 12 and under get in for $5. Your Sound Fest ticket will also get you into the Balloon Museum. All ticket proceeds will go to the YWCA New Mexico.
Put Me in Stitches
If you haven’t had a chance to check out the Albuquerque Quilt, Craft & Sewing Festival at Expo New Mexico, don’t worry, it runs through Saturday, May 24. Check out different demonstrations, classes, and free make and take workshops.
It’s the perfect place for sewing and quilting aficionados to check out things such as supplies, fabrics, tools, notions, and patterns. The festival continues through 5 p.m. today and will be open tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets are $10 and children 12 and under get in free.
One Good Beer Deserves Another
Just like the event title suggests: there will be (lots of) beer and there will be blues. Albuquerque Blues and Brews 2014 is this Sunday, May 25 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Sandia Resort & Casino. Bands will be booming throughout the day and dozens of breweries will be offering unlimited two-ounce beer samples. There will be raffles, games, home-brew demonstrations, vendor booths, and much more. There will also be a cocktail lounge for those wanting to mix things up.
It’s a 21 and over event. According to abqbluesandbrews.com, up to 3,000 people are expected to attend this years event. General admission tickets—which include unlimited two-ounce beer samples, a souvenir tasting glass, an event program, and entrance in the grand-prize drawing—are $25 in advance and $30 at the gate. VIP admission is $35 in advance and $40 at the gate. For those designated drivers (Please have one!), non-sampling tickets, which get you into the event but don’t get you the beer samples, are available for $10.
So what are your plans this weekend?
