Favorite Things Friday

The weekend is here and there’s plenty of stuff going on in Albuquerque—the last thing anyone wants to hear is, “I’m bored.” So before those words begin to roll off your tongue, scroll down on this page, grab a pen and a calendar, and plan. Because I’ll tell you one thing, we’re not going to be bored this weekend.

He who dances must pay the fiddler … or the door guy

We Albuquerqueans love salsa—the kind you scoop onto tostadas, of course, and the kind requiring your hips.

Once you’re able to handle the heat of the food, you’re a pro. Not a pro at the dance version of salsa? That’s OK. You’ll get there. The ArtBar by Catalyst Club (119 Gold Ave. SW) downtown is having salsa dancing lessons tonight from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. DJ Pedro will make sure the music doesn’t stop and the bartenders will make sure your glass doesn’t go empty.

An open dance will take place right after lessons and will last through midnight. Trust us you’ll want to stay. Like the food (you know what I mean—runny nose, burning mouth, yeah, dip another chip. You know you want to.), the dance is quite addicting. Plus the cocktails are known to induce bravery.

You must be 21 years old to enter and cover is $5 to $10.

Every dog has his day

Humans aren’t the only ones that enjoy a good book every now and then. Didn’t you know that? Well, the Loma Colorado Public Library (755 Loma Colorado Blvd. NE, Rio Rancho) did, plus they want to encourage your children to read. Fido and Rex do tend to put them at ease, right? Read to the Dogs will take place at the library tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 11.

And this is exactly what it sounds like: grab a book, sit down next to your fuzzy friend, and read away.

The event is sponsored by TALES of Joy and is free to everyone. The event lasts from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Can’t make it this weekend? It’s OK. Read to the Dogs takes place the second Saturday of every month.

Calling all brides

So you’re engaged? Head to Albuquerque The Magazine‘s Wedding Showcase 2014 on Sunday, Jan. 12, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Sandia Resort & Casino. The Duke City’s premier wedding professionals will all be there with samples, prizes, and dress suggestions.

Tickets are $40, which includes you and two of your friends. Not only do you get to hang out with us (make sure to say hi if you see us!), but you also get to talk to professional vendors out there! Plus: everyone that buys a ticket is automatically entered to win one of five iPad minis!

What are you doing this weekend?
