In 1998, Shana Gibson was named Miss Rodeo New Mexico—the same year she graduated from UNM and started her company, Modern Cowgirl. Initially an online retailer that carried other vendors’ products, the business has evolved to produce and sell Gibson’s own line of clothing and jewelry in retail stores. Even the stars have set their sights on this thoroughly modern cowgirl—Kellie Pickler, Sara Evans, and ZZ Top regularly sport her stuff.
